RydeFreeRT Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is RydeFreeRT?
RydeFreeRT is a program that provides fare-free public transit for youth in grades TK-12th within the entire SacRT network. Youth can ride on any SacRT buses, light rail, and SmaRT Ride mictrotransit service for free.
2. Do I qualify for a free pass?
If you live or go to school within the SacRT service area, you qualify. If you are currently homeless or in the foster care system, you qualify no matter where you are living or where you go to school.
3. How long does the program last?
The program is renewed on an annual basis depending on funding. The current program is valid through June 30, 2024. The following year’s program will be valid from June 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025.
4. How do I get the pass?
New cards will be distributed by schools prior to the end of the current school year. The current card is valid from June 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024 for grades TK through 12th. Youth who are experiencing homelessness or taking part in foster programs are also allowed to participate in the program, regardless of current residence or school address.
Students and youth that do not have a RydeFreeRT card, can visit SacRT’s Customer Service and Sales Center located at 1225 R Street (adjacent to the 13th Street Light Rail Station) or Sacramento County Public Libraries.
Note: The RydeFreeRT program does not apply to those over 18 years old that are pursuing their GED.
5. When and where can I use the pass?
You can ride SacRT any time of the day, any day of the week, and all year.
6. What do I do when I board a bus or light rail?
When you board a SacRT bus or light rail or the SmaRT Ride microtransit service, you will show your student ID or special pass to the driver.
